While not a sport I currently partake in, nor have I willing done so in the past. Bare-knuckle boxing was rather popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century. It was a gentleman's sport, of sorts. I've even read that because there was no padded protection to the hands, the severity of the beatings was only as much as the human hand could bare. Padded gloves allow for an excessive walloping that the hand normally wouldn't tolerate.
Clearly... much more civilized... hehe...
Anyhow, on my father's side I had a great-great something or other named John Dowland and on my mother's side I had a great-great something or other named John McCaleb. There's no record of whether they duked it out or not, but they were both bareknuckle boxers from Skullbone.
